Yella Sky Sound System, a Jamaican sound system culture unit from Jakarta – Indonesia, led by a producer and selector with the moniker Agent K, celebrates 10 years of existence on the Jamaican music scene by releasing an EP entitled ‘The Global Steppers’. As the title suggests, this mini album presents a series of powerful protagonists across countries.
A little flashback to December 17 2014, which was the first step in the presence of Yella Sky Sound System in the Indonesian music scene. Starting from a home studio with the strength of 5 retainers at that time, they succeeded in hatching their first debut album ‘General Irie’ around 2017, with the main single entitled ‘The Youth Of Today’ in collaboration with Aktarv8r, vocalist from the British experimental dub group Asian Dub Foundation, and Raydawgz, guitarist from the ska unit from Yogyakarta-Indonesia, Shaggydog. Apart from the LP, an EP and a series of single tracks were also created. 2020 became a difficult time when the world pandemic hit, which impacted Yella Sky Sound System, now leaving only the beatmaker, Agent K.
Since its inception, Yella Sky Sound System has actively built relationships with foreign talents and appeared at various international events. Talented figures and legendary figures from Southeast Asia to the Caribbean islands are well connected. Thanks to this strong international network, inspiration came to work on an EP with a “global” theme as a form of celebration of Yella Sky Sound System’s story journey over the past decade.
