Mothers are the heartbeat of every family, and Ghanaian reggae-dancehall star Major Steppa and Jamaican-Canadian artist Richie Flo have crafted a soulful tribute with their new single, “Obaatanpa (Mama).” Produced by Ghanaian hitmaker Smuchiz, this reggae-dancehall anthem celebrates the nurturing love of mothers worldwide.
“Obaatanpa,” a Twi phrase meaning “a nurturing mother,” captures the sacrifices and wisdom of mothers through heartfelt lyrics like Major Steppa’s “Everyday should be a Mother’s Day.” Richie Flo’s verses, inspired by his mother’s daily “peas an rice,” add a universal touch. “This song is for every mother, everywhere,” Richie Flo says. “Play it for her daily—her love never takes a break.”
The duo first connected through industry veteran Carl Thomas, bonding over their shared respect for family. After collaborating on their 2024 single “Pilot,” Major Steppa’s authenticity inspired Richie Flo to join this project. “His concept hit home,” Richie Flo explains. “It’s about cross-cultural love for our mothers.”
With Smuchiz’s vibrant production, “Obaatanpa (Mama)” is both a dancefloor hit and a heartfelt anthem. Stream it now on all major streaming platforms!
